The NFL world continues to mourn the heartbreaking loss of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland. The 24-year-old was found dead in Texas in what officials believe was a result of suicide. As the Cowboys return from their bye week and come together after a tough loss, the franchise is preparing to honor Kneeland’s passing with a tribute.

To honor the second-year player, the Cowboys will wear a special helmet decal for the rest of the season.
“They will also wear special t-shirts before the next 2 games vs. the Raiders, Eagles, while holding a moment of silence, other remembrances prior to Eagles game Nov. 23,” Todd Archer wrote on X.

The team will also hold a video tribute before their home game against the Philadelphia Eagles at AT&T Stadium. Marshawn’s girlfriend, Catalina, and his family are expected to attend. Many within the organization and across the NFL are still struggling to process the heartbreaking loss of Kneeland.

Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer leaned on advice from other coaches who have experienced similar losses. Assistant defensive line coach Greg Ellis expressed regret for not checking in on Kneeland more often about his well-being. Amid this difficult time, safety Juanyeh Thomas turned to prayer.

Both wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas penned soul-stirring tributes on social media after the news broke. Cowboys co-owner Stephen Jones was the first to receive the devastating call about Kneeland’s death in the middle of the night.
“Any time you get news like that, obviously it’s like a hole going through your heart,” Jones said on the 105.3 The Fan radio show. “I certainly was hoping that wasn’t the case. He’s so authentic in everything he’s about. He’s certainly feeling the pain of all our players. And we know all our players will deal differently. Everybody deals with grief in different ways.”

Kneeland, who was in his second NFL season, was selected by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan. He had one sack, 15 tackles, and six quarterback pressures across seven games this season. Marshawn had a promising career that was tragically cut short.

More details emerge about the final moments before Marshawn Kneeland’s death
Kneeland reportedly passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a crash on the southbound lanes of Dallas Parkway, as per The Dallas Morning News.
However, before that, he sent a message to the people closest to him. As per reports, Kneeland had sent a “goodbye” text to his loved ones before his death. His girlfriend, Catalina, had reportedly sent an alert, informing the police that the 24-year-old had a history of mental health struggles.
During the search, officers discovered Kneeland inside a portable restroom on Nov. 6.
