The New York Giants have endured a brutal season, but for a brief moment, hope flickered. Rumors that NFL legend Bill Belichick could return and reset the franchise sent a jolt through the fanbase. However, one New York reporter has now revealed the real reason Belichick rejected the job.

“I admit I thought Belichick to the Giants made some sense. But that was before I was told today it would NEVER happen,” NFL insider Gary Myers revealed. “Because Belichick had burned all bridges in the organization about 4-5 years ago, and he was absolutely not going to be a candidate.”
This revelation not only shut down the possibility entirely, but it also reframed the narrative around Belichick’s departure from the NFL coaching carousel.

“I look at this as a smart face-saving pre-emptive strike by Belichick before word got out that the Giants had no interest. It should help his recruiting,” Myers further noted. “We already knew no other NFL team was interested because he went through two hiring cycles without an offer. That’s why he’s at North Carolina.”

The 73-year-old Belichick spent his entire pre-UNC career in the NFL, winning six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and two more with the Giants as Parcells’ defensive coordinator

Recently, the Giants made a seismic decision on Monday, November 10, 2025, when they fired head coach Brian Daboll following a catastrophic 2-8 start through ten games of the 2025 NFL season. Following this, many were hopeful for a Belichick return to the franchise. However, Belichick made it clear that nostalgia wouldn’t be pulling him back to New York.
“I have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization and both the Mara and Tisch families,” Belichick wrote on a post. “The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my coaching journey. It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells’ staff for over a decade.”

As is often the case with vacancies, the headlines then immediately shifted from “who got fired” to “who’s coming next.” As of now, Mike Kafka, the Giants’ former offensive coordinator, has been named as the interim head coach.

With the franchise spiraling and only seven games left to salvage dignity, the Giants turned to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as interim head coach, hoping for a steady voice in a fractured locker room.

Kafka has served as the Giants’ offensive coordinator since 2022, and in his recent interview ahead of game 1, he suggested that he’d be calling the plays in the next game too.
“Our players are pros. My job is to get them in the best position to be successful and work through the week here and continue to make adjustments with the staff as we’re going to continue to prepare for Green Bay,” Kafka said Wednesday in his first press conference. “So really taking our time, making sure we cross our T’s, dot our I’s, put together a great plan for the players because those are the guys that have been on my mind the last 48 hours.”
With the Giants at 2–8, those next games carry weight, especially as they prepare to face the Packers at MetLife Stadium. Kafka knows every step matters now.
