Justin Fields is ready to steer the Jets out of their 0-3 slump after getting cleared from his concussion. And he will face another QB famous for getting a concussion hit. Tua Tagovailoa! But first-time HC Aaron Glenn wants urgency from his players. And this has given other NFL analysts enough time to comment on their situation.

ESPN analyst Rich Eisen appeared on the September 24 episode of Julian Edelman‘s Games With Names podcast, where the Patriots Hall of Famer suddenly popped a question: “So, what’s your current mindset on thoughts on this year’s Jets?” It was a direct question about their result.

So, Eisen also took a direct stance as he praised their mindset to sign Fields. The analyst replied, “Justin Fields…you’re paying some of these guys $50 million a year based on past performance without the playoff appearances, wins, rings, and injuries. So you’re going to pay somebody, right? You’re paying somebody $20 million a year to give it a whirl.” That’s pretty accurate.

The Jets signed Justin Fields to a 2-year $40 million ($20 million AAV) contract. Compare that to mammoth Trevor Lawrence‘s 5-year $275 million deal ($55 million AAV) with a 1-1 win-loss record in playoffs. Similarly, Kyler Murray took the Cardinals to the playoffs once in 2021 in his 6-year career (which they lost). But they signed a 5-year $230.5 million ($46.1 million AAV) deal in 2022. The biggest example of a contract backfiring is the Browns‘ 5-year $230 million fully guaranteed contract with Deshaun Watson.

Eisen did not stop the money alone. He cited other factors and added, “It’s not like he’s 32, he’s 26. You’re giving him an opportunity to prove that he’s a two-way threat…and one game in as of this taping, he looked pretty damn sharp. That was the best I have ever seen Justin Fields look. So let’s see where it can go. These are good bets, good moves to make.

We saw this during the season opener against the NY Jets. Aaron Rodgers was angry that Aaron Glenn did not keep him. But with 16 of 22 passes in 218 yards and 1 touchdown, Justin Fields took them ahead with 7 minutes remaining before the Chris Boswell FG won the game for the Steelers while 1 minute remained.

All this has shown that Ohio State alumni could lead the offense. However, Aaron Glenn is concerned. His reputation is at stake here.

Justin Fields needs to lighten Aaron Glenn’s worries

Rich Eisen praised the Jets HC for asserting his dominance from the moment he arrived there. He chose his players, combinations, and coaches. But after 3 weeks, he still looks worried on the sidelines as the NY Jets have failed to win any game.

Rich Eisen first called him a “Jet originally,” as he played under Bill Parcells. He then quickly moved to their strategy during the offseason, “I love the fact that they paid both Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner. It’s not like you’re not going to keep them. It’s not like you don’t know who you already have in those players. So you sign them early. I like the fact that they drafted again to hit the offensive line tackles, right? Two good tackles. So they made the right bets.”

Yes, the coach is worried about the results. But his mindset is right. Both WR Garrett Wilson and CB Sauce Gardner impressed in their rookie years with the New York franchise, so Glenn did not waste time signing a 4-year, $130 million extension with the receiver and a 4-year, $120.5 million deal with the cornerback.

Yet, they are overdependent on Justin Fields. In week 2, after he left the game with a concussion, the offense faltered, only scoring 10 points. Tyrod Taylor tried to secure a win but failed by 2 points. So, the game is on. It’s a race, and they cannot afford to let their rivals march far ahead. Otherwise, they will be out of playoff contention even before they realize it.
