The New England Patriots hired Drake Maye but severely needed to create a strong backing in the wide receiver department for him as well. That’s why they went ahead to hire Washington Huskies’ WR Ja’Lynn Polk with the 37 overall pick.

Coach Jerod Mayo seems focused on rebuilding the New England side, eyeing yet another possible legacy for the team. Coming off a 1,159-yard season and 9 touchdowns, the receiver is among one of the best prospects coming out of college. Although the wideout didn’t get drafted in the first round, his enthusiastic self knew his chances to make it to the league were high. After all, he is not going to be a stranger at the Bay State; he has an ally with whom he spent a season in his college football career.

Polk told KPRC 2, “They’re getting a monster, a guy who loves the game, a guy who loves everything.” The wideout didn’t get drafted in the first round, but seemed highly enthusiastic about his chances of making it to the league.

Expressing his confidence and excitement, Polk added, “I’m married to it and I’m looking forward to doing legendary stuff and contributing to the team so we can win a lot of games. It’s a blessing. I’m ready for the opportunity. I’m excited and eager to go out there on the field and show the world who I am and what I can do as a player and, even better, show people who I am as a person.”

What’s better for the Pats and Polk himself is the fact that he won’t be working with a completely new team. Tyler Hughes is one of the latest additions to the coaching team. The WR coach returned to the Pats after one year with the Washington Huskies as an offensive assistant. The team will surely intend to capitalize on this connection to further strengthen Polk.

There was definitely a comfortability with Ja’Lynn given Tyler’s experience with him,” Patriots college scouting director Camren Williams said just moments after the selection, per the team’s website. In essence, Polk’s stats from the 2023 season were actually career highs of his college football tenure that he delivered under Hughes’ training. The fact that Patriots wanted to get the pairing right was only logical.

Ja’Lynn Polk gets praise from a WR coach!

Did you know Ja’Lynn Polk has been training with a private NFL WR/TE specialist? The WR has been training with the WR/TE specialist Delfonte Diamond for years. Diamond thinks that Polk is going places as he commented on his athleticism, “Ja’Lynn Polk is a freak of nature, he’s a hidden gem in the draft.”

The team’s QB, Drake Maye, who was picked 3rd overall in this year’s draft, also feels that Polk is an “electric” addition, further stating, “He goes out there and he’s able to make plays for his team. Great guy, awesome player, and I had an opportunity throughout this process to see a lot of his plays that he’s been able to put up for his team. And I’m excited to be able to get to work with him.

And Maye is hitting the spot right on. Working with the likes of Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan during his time with the Huskies, the WR amassed 1000+ yards in 2023. This capability to make a significant impact despite such competition showcases that he might be exactly what the Pats need this season.

The team has someone like Hughes to better understand the strengths of the latest addition to their team. They will need to redefine their strategies if they wish to have a different outcome than the 2023 season. Whether Polk will be able to help Drake Maye and team reach the playoffs is yet to be seen. Can Polk prove to be a good fit for the team? The 2024 season will have the answer.
