This was supposed to be the year for the Denver Broncos. With Sean Payton at the helm and Russell Wilson creating magic on the field, the last few weeks weren’t supposed to be this difficult. After the initial turmoil, the Broncos found stability, but the loss against the New England Patriots has jolted head coach Payton, and he’s not shying away.

With a record of 7-8 this season, the Broncos have been one of the most unpredictable teams in the league. But against the underperforming Patriots, the Denver team was expected to win. That did not turn out to be the case, and now their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread.

Sean Payton gives a dose of reality

“Our margin for error right now isn’t what it needs to be, and we end up on the losing end of a game,” said a disappointed Payton after the game. The 59-year-old Super Bowl-winning head coach with the New Orleans Saints is on point here as the Broncos failed to grasp one of the best opportunities to grab a playoff spot in the AFC.

The Broncos offense acted too late; they were 7-23 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Losing just by 23-26, each squad member felt this loss. But none more than the QB Wilson himself.

“We probably should have won this game,” said a dejected Wilson at the post-game press conference. He and the offensive unit were on fire in the last quarter, scoring 20, hence the feeling of possibly winning the game. But HC Payton and QB Wilson must perform now with only two games remaining.

The Broncos need throttle in their step

“I haven’t done the math. I’m feeling this loss right now,” said Wilson. But the math is obvious on their chances for the playoffs. There is only one requirement from Sean Payton and the team: a victory in the last two games of the regular season.

Only victories will have them in a position where they can oust the Buffalo Bills from the playoff race since the Broncos have a better head-to-head against them. But multiple games elsewhere also need to be in their favor for the tiebreaker scenario with the Bills.
