The Houston Texans‘ General Manager, Nick Caserio, dropped a fresh update on their running back Joe Mixon’s injury. While fans were eagerly waiting for the 29-year-old to recover before the upcoming clash against the Buffalo Bills, the update didn’t turn out to be satisfactory, leaving fans with no clear answer regarding his comeback.

“It’s a very gray situation. Joe’s worked at it. There were times where he’s made progress and other times when the progress is kinda stalled. Obviously we’re getting pretty late in the game here, I don’t want to establish any sort of expectations. I don’t think we have anymore clarity at this point,” Caserio told Sports Radio 610.

Meanwhile, the scary update was compensated for by another positive update for the Texans fans. Their quarterback, C.J. Stroud, returned to practice on Tuesday, as HC DeMeco Ryans confirmed that he is “progressing and doing better.” However, the team also confirmed that he will not be a part of the upcoming week 12 clash against the Buffalo Bills.

Mixon remains sidelined due to a complicated foot and ankle injury sustained during the offseason, while he was away from team activities. The 29-year-old was placed on the reserve/non-football injury (NFI) list to begin the 2025 season. This designation rendered him ineligible for at least the first four games. However, despite the hopes for a mid-season return, it now seems like his participation this year has become bleak.

With five wins and five losses this season, the Texans surely seem to be missing his presence. While the 2024 season saw him secure 245 attempts for 1016 yards and 11 touchdowns in all, it still remains to be seen if Nick Chubb and Woody Marks level up their game to cover the gap left amid Mixon’s persistent injury struggles.

The ongoing delay in Joe Mixon’s recovery is raising serious concerns about his future with the Houston Texans. While Nick Caserio’s latest update from General Manager Nick Caserio also didn’t bring good news on his recovery status, the ambiguity has raised doubts about how much trust the Texans can place in him in the future.

Mixon’s 2024 season surely unfolded commendable results, but the ongoing season saw the Texans strengthen their backfield by signing Nick Chubb and drafting rookie Woody Marks. On a financial note, Mixon signed the deal with the Texans worth around $19.75 million over two years (initially reported as a three-year extension worth up to $25.5-27 million) with roughly $13 million guaranteed.

His base salary in the ongoing season is about $7 million, with a cap hit of around $9.4 million. This means that the Texans are bound to pay him $13 million, despite his inactivity throughout the season. While the team offered a start to Jo’quavious Marks during the week 10 game, it still remains to be seen if he continues to be a reliable option for the team.
