In a recent interview, the Demaryius Thomas Team MVP Award winner, Pat Surtain II, reveals the commonalities between Nick Saban and Sean Payton. Taking to the X handle, Jim Rome posted a clip from the interview, with the caption, “They really know how to get their players dialed in, locked in, and ready to go.

When posed with the question “Are there any similarities between Sean Payton and Nick Saban?,” Surtain remarks on their ethics of winning. Having trained under the best coaches, his realization helped him appreciate both Saban and Payton. “When you got two guys with that caliber, and they understand what it takes to win with that culture, the stage will be set…,” Surtain remarked. He concluded with the acknowledgment that they know “how to bring a team together and how to win.”

Under Saban’s tutelage at Alabama, Surtain has built his ability to become a talented cornerback. Nick Saban’s tenure at Alabama Crimson Tide, help create top NFL prospects.

After 17 seasons at Alabama with six national championships, Saban, 72, has left his post with 292 career wins. Which is the highest among any active coach. Surtain reflected on Saban’s “dynamics of Excellence” and “strong work ethic,” which has helped him become better and successful. The 72-year-old trained Patrick at Alabama to “compete against the best of the best.”

Despite his well-rounded training in Alabama, Surtain opined that he still needed a boost of confidence, and that’s where Sean Payton came in.

Sean Payton, a seasoned NFL coach, with an experience of 34 years, beginning his tenure as head coach of the Denver Broncos on February 3, 2023. His 15-year stint with the New Orleans Saints, even garnered Super Bowl victory in 2009.

Talking about Payton, Surtain was excited about his position as head coach. “His resume speaks for itself. I can’t wait to get to work with him. I think he’s going to provide the tools necessary for us to have a winning culture in the organization,” the CB opined.

Surtain adds, “It’s something that’s in their DNA. It’s that type of mentality you look for in great coaches, day in and day out. Those are the qualities you look for in a coach,” drawing a parallel between Nick Saban and Payton. Their continuous drive to excellency despite the bumps on the roads distinguishes them as better coaches. After all, it is their detail-oriented nature that helped Patrick Surtain II excel as a player throughout.
