Drew Bledsoe went hard on Tom Brady right from the start during the Netflix roast show that aired on May 5. During that show, he brought his grudge to life when Brady stole his job as the starting QB for the New England Patriots. He said, “A lot of people just assume that I have a lot of animosity towards Tom Brady. Well, I’m here to tell you tonight, in front of millions of people, that you’re correct, I f***ing hate him.”

It’s already been over a month since the roast but Drew Bledsoe is still living another hilarious episode with his replacement. And it’s still got to do with their roles. And as it usually is, a little bit of truth is tinged behind the jokes as Brady’s predecessor voiced out the disappointment he faced back then.

Drew Bledsoe roasts Tom Brady as the worst backup QB

As we traditionally understand, a backup QB is a temporary replacement but Tom Brady took his backup role quite far. In a video posted by ML Football on X on June 13, Drew Bledsoe called the NFL GOAT the “worst backup QB” in NFL history, saying, “You never learned when I got healthy that you were supposed to go sit back down.”

The joke’s all in good light as Tom Brady appeared visibly amused at the remark as they made history at his HoF induction ceremony. However, looking back in days, fans witnessed the moments when “with Tom it was bittersweet” for Bledsoe. In New England, surrounded by Brady’s rising stardom, Bledsoe felt like an odd man out. In the offseason, Buffalo, an AFC East opponent, received him.

For Bledsoe, it was a bittersweet experience; while he appreciated Brady’s presence as a teammate and friend, he believed he deserved to lead New England on the field. “With Tom it was bittersweet — love the guy,” Bledsoe said. “But at the same time, that’s my job that he’s got. And that’s my team that he’s leading. And I don’t get to go out there and do that.”

Still, Bledsoe was never able to hold off his ire at Brady for too long. Their relationship has stayed friendly despite the divergent directions their careers went. If Bledsoe never got injured and if Tom Brady never had a chance to pull off a remarkable start, the history of the NFL would have been quite different. However, Bledsoe’s injury put a full stop to his fame as the face of the Patriots.

How Tom Brady seized Drew Bledsoe’s starting role

Before Tom Brady, Drew Bledsoe was the star of New England with a promising future. In his nine seasons with the Patriots, he put an end to a seven-year postseason drought, led them to four playoff appearances, won two national titles, and made a Super Bowl appearance. But after his injury in 2001, backup QB Tom Brady took his place, for good.

Tom Brady performed so well in his debut starter season leading the Patriots to their first Super Bowl Championship against the Los Angeles Rams, that Bledsoe had no door open for him even when he became well enough to reclaim the starting role. But all’s well that ends well because this incident changed the history of the Patriots as Brady won six Super Bowls. What do you think?
