Deion Sanders surprised the footballing world with his decision to join the struggling Colorado Buffaloes. And especially after he promised not to leave Jacksonville after a highly successful three-year stint. Fans have always wondered about the reason behind such a decision to switch, which can go either way in future. However, as the coach revealed in a recent interview, it wasn’t just the big stage and the money.

Prime Time knew his move would increase the chances of a national collegiate championship. But it was more to do with Jackson State’s ideology. And also a calling from above for the two-time Super Bowl-winning NFL icon.

Sanders had a 27-6 record with the Jackson State Tigers since joining in 2020 and won back-to-back South Western Atlantic Conference Championships. However, no SWAC team has ever won a National Championship. Coach Prime wants one. And Deion didn’t think Jackson State’s ambitions matched his own.

“Wasn’t just the resources. It was the ideology, the thought process and the forward-thinking. It was meeting me at the crossroads. That’s what was involved in that. And sooner or later, you have to really look in the mirror and say, ‘Are they going to get there? No. Do they even want to get there?’ And I had to ask those questions and really be honest with it,” Coach Prime said about coming to Denver.

Prime got the call from above

Deion Sanders is a man of faith. And he has previously said, during his controversial Colorado move, that God was the one driving his ship. CU last won a national championship in 1990 and has seen just one winning season. And after a 1-11 season last year, Deion will need all the help he can get from up above.

“It wasn’t about finances. I ain’t never appeared to you as broke or hurting or none of that. So it was never about that. I didn’t go to Jackson for money and I didn’t leave Jackson for money. I wasn’t at Jacksonville for money. I was there because it was a calling…. Sometimes, we outstay our time. Because we wanna leave when we wanna leave. Not when we need to leave…. We got to really hear a voice,” he added later.

Coach Prime recently got in a little trouble because of forcing his players to pray along with him. Regardless, Prime got a lot of his Jacksonville talent to Colorado, including his son and quarterback Shedeur Sanders. And knowing him, Sanders is probably going to get his hands on that championship soon, with the mentality he is building.
