J.J. McCarthy is getting some serious attention as Bill Belichick, the coach who helped make Tom Brady a legend, gave McCarthy high praise. This isn’t the first time McCarthy’s been recognized – his own coach, Jim Harbaugh, called him the best quarterback in Michigan’s history. Naturally, people started comparing him to the legendary Michigan QB, Tom Brady. Now, Brady’s own mentor, Bill Belichick, has offered words of approval, further boosting McCarthy’s rising star.

Shortly after McCarthy joined the Minnesota Vikings, Belichick studied his game film and gave him high praise. He even commented on how McCarthy would protect the team and approved the smart decision by the Vikings.

Bill Belichick approves Vikings’ last-minute trade for McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings made a savvy move, trading up just a single spot to land J.J. McCarthy. Now this last-minute move earned a stamp of approval from none other than Bill Belichick. During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Belichick had nothing but praise for the young quarterback. “There’s not much to not like about McCarthy” he began. Belichick then highlighted McCarthy’s strengths saying, “He’s got a quick release and sees coverages very well.” He  also added, “He can play under center and out of the shotgun.”

Most importantly, Belichick emphasized McCarthy’s reliability – “He has good ball security and he doesn’t turn the ball over.” While saying so, he gave his final verdict stating, “This guy….he’s gonna protect the team.”  With such a glowing endorsement from a coaching legend, the Vikings’ decision to secure McCarthy seems even wiser.

McCarthy targets legendary status with Vikings

J.J. McCarthy’s skillset aligns perfectly with the Minnesota Vikings’ needs. Just like Bill Belichick, pre-draft scouting reports have also praised his passing ability, and throwing skills. It’s also evident in his impressive stats of 22 touchdowns, 2,991 yards, and only 4 interceptions in a championship season for Michigan. This aggressive passer seems like a natural fit for the Vikings’ offensive style.

While he might learn under Sam Darnold initially, his long-term potential under coach Kevin O’Connell seems exciting. While some doubted his NFL readiness, Belichick’s words prove he’s got what it takes. However, comparisons to Tom Brady’s legacy and six Super Bowl rings might be a bit premature now. McCarthy has the talent to succeed in Minnesota, but it will take time and development. Also, with the right coaching and support from the Vikings, he could lead the team to Super Bowl victories and “protect them” at all costs.
