Kalen DeBoer made his mark coaching smaller, under-the-radar programs. He quietly racked up wins until his breakout success at Washington, where he transformed a mediocre team into a College Football Playoff contender. He even earned consecutive Pac-12 Coach of the Year awards with his work at Huskies. That success soon landed him one of the toughest jobs in sports — replacing Nick Saban at Alabama.

On the other hand, Saban is a well-known legend. During his 17 seasons, he built a dynasty at Alabama, winning countless titles. Filling those shoes is a near-impossible task. Though DeBoer inherits a winning program, the pressure is quite immense. He has huge expectations to meet and faces tough questions about following a legend.

In a recent interview, Kalen DeBoer was asked if it’s harder to turn around a struggling program like Washington or to take over a strong team like Alabama after a legendary coach. “I think that one thing I do have is I’ve had a chance to learn you know when take over a program whether it be Fresno State, Washington, Alabama,” he answered diplomatically. He understands that building a winning culture takes time and strategy, regardless of the program he’s leading. Thus, he explained, “The timing is always different; there’s so many different variables that come into play.”

He knows that “where that program’s at that time, the level, the area of the country” impacts his strategy for success. “Each coaching job is complex and unique,” he said. Despite his past wins, DeBoer understands the immense pressure of replacing a legend like Saban. Replacing a “GOAT” carries major expectations, and let’s see if he’s prepared to face those challenges head-on.

The Saban legacy: Can DeBoer live up to it?

Nick Saban’s retirement left a massive void at Alabama, and Kalen DeBoer was quickly hired to fill it. Despite his impressive win with Washington, DeBoer stated, “I don’t expect to fill Coach Saban’s shoes.” He quite understands the uphill battle ahead. Some even believe Alabama is so successful after Saban that it can’t fail. But replacing Nick Saban isn’t just about winning games.

Saban transformed Alabama, attracting more students and funding than ever before. His impact — the “Flutie effect” — was quite extraordinary. Since Saban’s arrival in 2007, Alabama’s enrollment has skyrocketed by 60%, far above the national average. His success on the field was incredible, too — 6 national championships, 9 conference titles, 206 wins, and more. Even if DeBoer manages to win games, replacing Saban’s massive impact off the field is quite impossible. Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments below.
