Following the dismissal of Jimbo Fisher, the Texas A&M Aggies have turned to former Duke head coach and ex-Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko to lead the team in 2024 and beyond. Despite a tumultuous start to the coaching search, with prominent names like Oregon’s Dan Lanning and Ohio State’s Ryan Day circulating, many, including a significant portion of the Aggie fan base and media, found Elko to be the most sensible and fitting choice for the role.
With a track record of turning around the fortunes of the Duke program, leading them to 16 wins and two bowl appearances in just two seasons, Elko has significant resources and fan support. In contrast to Fisher’s “my way or the highway” approach, Elko is focused on proving himself through hard work and revamping the gameplay and recruitment strategy to strengthen the Aggies.

Elko rights Fisher’s recruiting wrongs
The contrast between former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher and the new leader, Mike Elko, is evident in their approach to recruiting. Despite Fisher securing the No. 1 recruiting class in 2022, the immediate results fell short, resulting in his departure from College Station. Elko recognizes the importance of both local recruitment and fostering strong relationships with high school coaches, shaping prospects. This week, Elko demonstrated his commitment by spending Tuesday actively recruiting in the Houston area. “Obviously, it’s an extremely talented group of kids,” opined Elko while expanding on his recruiting strategies.

The new Texas A&M head coach firmly believes in the pool of talent that lies in the Huston area and affirms his approach by stating, “A lot of great former Aggies, a lot of great current Aggies, and hopefully a lot of great future Aggies down here!”
Houston is the hometown for seven current Aggies players who have found themselves a spot on the roster, including Connor Able, Drake Bhatia, Jacob Graham, Aki Ogunbiyi, Will Smoot, Garrett Townsend, and Truette Tumey. Elko strives to replace Fisher’s authoritative approach with a more effective “blue-collar mentality.”
