Shedeur Sanders became the most sacked player in the country in 2023 after being sacked 52 times in a single season. Did painkillers soothe the pain? Sure, but having a coach and a father, Deion Sanders, who had been there in his shoes back in his days was probably more soothing for Shedeur Sanders. Colorado’s defense was a much-discussed topic that ended with negative remarks by analysts in 2023. The stats just rubbed salt on the wound. Per Colorado Buffaloes Wire, the team’s defense was its weakness not only in 2023 but also in the 2022 season.

35.91 points allowed per game, 464.6 total yards allowed per game, 296.55 passing yards per game, 20 turnovers, and 27 sacks made up the 2023 season for the Buffs’ defense. The numbers are nowhere near the ones that could make the Buffs win. Despite Deion Sanders and DC Charles Kelly having plenty of experience in playing the defense side of the ball, the team is struggling. However, per a resurfaced video, back from 1985, when Deion Sanders played as a freshman at Florida State University, Prime has been having bad luck with defense since he was 18. “Last year when I was a QB in high school, we had a weak spot on our defense. I would throw to that spot and they considered me the weak spot,” Sanders confessed in the interview.

He aspired to ‘not be the weak spot’ then, an aspiration that his QB son shares with him now. Well, Deion Sanders did work on his skills on both sides of the ball, being considered a cornerback and a wide receiver of the elite class in the NFL, his ‘NFL Defensive Player of the Year award’ in 1994 is a witness. However, the real question here is: Would Shedeur Sanders get the defense he needs as a QB to redeem Buff’s name this season?

The defense line at Colorado in 2024

Seems that Deion Sanders has pinpointed the exact thing that was holding it back in the later part of the 2023 season. Being the ‘transfer portal king’, Sanders has used his powers to the best of his abilities to line up the perfect defensive linemen for Buffs’ defense. Now, the Buffs defense boasts of popular talent from high schools like 3-star edge Amontrae Bradford, 3-star DL Eric Brantley, 3-star DL Omar White, and 4-star DL Brandon Davis-Swain.
