After the 2023 regular season toil, the Las Vegas Raiders are slowly shifting their focus to the offseason, eyeing to set new benchmarks in the 2024 NFL season. Amid uncertainties in coaching and the general manager roles, the team confronts the pivotal challenge of securing a long-term solution at the quarterback position. The potential absence of the top three signal-callers has underscored the pressing need for the Raiders to acquire a promising young quarterback.
The Raiders may not have the opportunity to acquire NDL Draft 2023 top picks Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, who are expected to be among the first picks. While Jayden Daniels could be considered, since his draft stock has risen after winning the Heisman Trophy, potentially making him a less attainable option. However, the Raiders placed at No.7. could potentially find their missing piece in Michigan’s evolving roster.

Potential replacement for Michigan QB, J.J. McCarthy
After the 2023 regular season, the University of Michigan faces a quarterback quandary as their starter, J.J. McCarthy, is anticipated to move head to the NFL. ESPN’s Pete Thamel has raised an interesting possibility to tackle the situation: the potential recruitment of Texas transfer Maalik Murphy to Michigan. This prospect, however, hinges on the final decision taken by Michigan’s current quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, and whether he opts for the NFL draft this year or not.

Maalik Murphy, a former four-star recruit, has garnered significant attention from several renowned college football programs, such as USC, Baylor, Georgia, Oregon State, South Carolina, Syracuse, and Duke. Michigan is likely to be a prominent contender for Murphy, considering his previous interest in the team during the recruitment process and the potential opening if McCarthy chooses to leave. As for the Raiders, in the event they can’t secure the anticipated J.J. McCarthy, Maalik Murphy could serve as an equally excellent alternative.
Raiders find their single-caller in Michigan
Per ESPN’s Matt Miller, in his mock draft, the 22-year-old Drake Maye is projected to join the New York Giants, while the Las Vegas Raiders are anticipated to choose Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy as their future franchise quarterback. “McCarthy is instinctive, efficient and effective as a second-effort creator outside of the pocket,” Miller suggested, even though the Michigan statists fail to place him at a favorable spot, Millar is imperative that the young quarterback is destined to be packed earlier.

Millar further pointed out that since Shedeur Sanders the famed Colorado Buffaloes quarterback and Deion Sander’s son, coupled with Quinn Ewers (Texas) are anticipated to stay in college for the 2024 season, McCarthy stands as the sole first-round-caliber passer left on my board. According to Miller, there are no quarterbacks deemed worthy of a first-round selection after McCarthy.
