The San Francisco 49ers‘ QB issues are far from solved. They had some major issues last year. And it ended up biting them in the NFC championship against the Philadelphia Eagles. They had no healthy QB to take the field and now, the franchise is determined not to let history repeat itself in the 2023 season. The Niners GM John Lynch has left Brock Purdy and Trey Lance shattered with the latest decision on the franchise’s position.

Lance had to sit out the 2022 season due to a prolonged injury. Third-choice quarterback Purdy stepped on the field and put on a show for the team in the latter half of the season before was struck down by an injury of his own.

After watching all their QBs go down with injuries, the Niners general manager John Lynch has apparently made a decision. According to NFL analyst Ari Meirov, the franchise is likely in the market for a veteran QB.

The ‘likely’ announcement may come as a rude shock for Brock Purdy and Trey Lance, who would have wanted to compete for a starting spot. But both of them suffered injuries in the just concluded season. Lance was struck with a season-ending neck injury early in the campaign, while Purdy went down with a torn UCL in the NFC championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It looks like Purdy’s injury is going to take some time to heal. According to Lynch, the young QB will have a meeting with his doctors in Arizona later this week in hope of getting surgery. The Niners are still keeping things hushed about who they’ll be targeting in the market. But the news will put a dent in both Lance and Purdy’s chances of cementing the starting spot.

The Niners seek a veteran: Who will answer the call?

The 49ers want a safety blanket. According to the GM, they need to “insulate” themselves, so they don’t have to go through the NFC championship game heartbreak again. But who could take that place in the roster? The franchise wants a veteran QB so that rules out another draft pick. They already have two young QBs, and they want some experience in the mix.

“[I] was in some meetings today where the league’s discussing potential solutions for a third quarterback. But the reality is it’s very few and far between where those instances happen. So, we’ll see. Yeah, we may have to look in the quarterback market in addition to Brock and Trey, to insulate ourselves from whatever may happen.”

If Aaron Rodgers decides to part ways with the Green Bay Packers, he may want to consider joining the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers have a top-notch roster with the league’s finest defense, and their offense is equally impressive. By joining the 49ers, Rodgers could potentially finish his career with a Super Bowl victory in the upcoming season.

The Niners may also be the only team to make Tom Brady reconsider his retirement plans. He might have declared his retirement for good, but he’s come back before, so who’s to say he won’t come back for one more shot at that eighth Super Bowl win with his childhood favourite team? Other potential options include Derek Carr or Geno Smith (if he becomes a free agent).

Although there is a possibility that this veteran QB could act as a backup to the young players, fans will have to wait and see who will eventually join the Levi’s Stadium roster.
