Deion Sanders’ debut game as Head Coach of the Buffaloes was “Prime” time television. Nearly 7.3 million people watched their tussle and victory over TCU. It was the most-watched telecast of the day on any network. Their next match did even better with the game drawing in 8.73 million viewers for Fox Sports. Now their upcoming game against their state rivals promises to be more exciting owing to recent events.

With the 2-0 start to the season, it seems that Coach Prime is the lucky charm the Buffs have been waiting for in a long time. However, it will take more than just that to please the man at the helm.

Games fell short of Sanders’ expectations

In the first game of the Prime Era for the Buffs, the squad beat TCU 45-42. Deion’s son Shedeur Sanders made history by breaking the all-time Colorado single-game passing record with his 510-yard outing, in his very first game. It goes without saying the triumvirate: QB Sanders, CB Travis Hunter, and RB Dylan Edwards wreaked havoc for the Horned Frogs on the field.

A week after Colorado made the defining statement, the Buffs secured another historic win against long-time rival Nebraska in a 36-14 game. After such a stellar start to the season, fans expected that Coach Prime would be pleased with his boys. However, he said the opposite in a recent Rich Eisen interview.

Deion Sanders said, “But we still feel like there’s meat left on the bone and we still didn’t play up to our expectations in either game. The first game, defensively, we were horrible. We made some big missed cues and mental mistakes. In the second game, we were horrible offensively in the first half. Defensively we were picking up tremendously.”

For the next game against the Colorado State Rams, Coach Prime is definitely pushing his team to bring their A-game. Especially since the upcoming match will be personal for the father-son duo. While Sanders continues to push limits for his team, it is worth recalling Jay Norvell’s strong opinions about Sanders.

Jay Norvell’s jab: From one coach to another

Recently, Jay Norvell, Head Coach of Colorado State, took a jab at Sanders’ habit of wearing his cap and sunglasses during media interviews. He said, “When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat off and my glasses off.” What came out as a thinly veiled jab, was taken head-on by Sanders, who found it motivating for his team. But again, things did get nasty when Norvell added that his mother didn’t raise him well.

What started as a mild jab led to a back-and-forth. Sanders responded, “But he alluded to the fact that his momma raised him and my momma didn’t raise me right.” This was when Deion Sanders’ mom, Connie shot a three-word message on the mic: “I raised him right.” Well, Sanders and his son would rather prefer backing it up with actual action. And what better answer than beating Norvell’s team at the upcoming Rocky Mountain Showdown?

Prime Time has already leveraged his connections to bring together names like The Rock and shows like The Pat McAfee Show, College GameDay, and First Take at Boulder. Things look really great for Colorado as their spirits are high with their recent successes. They will be facing a 0-1 Colorado State Rams. But Sanders has no intentions to take the game lightly as he conveyed, “We just want to put it all together and show our best hand.”
