‘The Guy Catches the F*cking Ball on His Helmet’: Tom Brady on Losing Super Bowl XLII to the New York Giants

Tom Brady, in his fourth instalment of his documentary series ‘Man in the Arena’ recalls one of the saddest moments in his footballing career. In this episode, he recalls the day when his almost perfect 2007 season with the New England Patriots came to an unfortunate end against the Eli Manning led New York Giants.
That season was no less than a fascination for the Patriots. The Patriots went 16-0 throughout the regular season, but were unable to complete an unbeaten season after losing in Super Bowl XLII to the Giants. A loss that Brady claims is worth two of his Super Bowl rings. Since the Patriots were riding on an insatiable desire to win their one last game to call it a season.

The Super Bowl loss that haunts Tom Brady
Brady in his latest episode recalled his most shattering moment in his career as Eli Manning connected for a touchdown catch with receiver David Tyree, who caught the ball with his helmet. “He [Eli Manning] escapes wheels out of the pocket,” Brady said. “Throws it. Im watching the ball flutter in the middle of the field. Rodney Harrison is right there on the play. Goes up. Hits the ball, hits the helmet. And the guy catches the f*cking ball on his helmet.”

That catch caused the undefeated and seemingly invincible Patriots the Super Bowl. It was a shattering night for Tom Brady and obviously for the rest of the franchise as well. Brady would have been a perfect 4-for-4 in Super Bowls at that time, matching his childhood hero, Joe Montana. Brady would have done everything there is to accomplish by the age of 30.

“Had we won that game,” Brady said. “I don’t know, I’m not a big hypothetical guy, but maybe the desire is a little bit different, if you’re looking at a silver lining. Maybe the desire to reach that point, maybe I would have been fulfilled — not to stop playing at that time, but I don’t know. Maybe I’d play another seven or eight years, and maybe I’m fulfilled, maybe not.”

Although, Brady did get his revenge after he won the Super Bowl in a rematch against the Giants for the 2011 season. But the 2007 loss left Brady with a mark of incompletion and a deep regret which has still haunted him to this day.
