The New York Giants secured a crucial victory over the Green Bay Packers, in front of their London fans last Sunday. But as the team returned from their foreign excursion, they did so with a man short. And that man is none other than the ‘Scottish Hammer’, Jamie Gillan. Gillan is reportedly stuck in London due to passport issues preventing him from returning to the US.

According to Mike Garofolo, the Giants’ punter is in London sorting out issues with his passport. Although the team expects him to be stateside by Thursday, the Big Blue will be looking to work out replacement punters. Just in case things don’t go according to plan. But as of Tuesday, the Giants have not made such a move, raising fans’ hopes for Gilan’s quick return.

Jamie Gillan is a Scottish national who moved to the United States as a teenager. Unpicked in the 2019 NFL Draft, he signed with the Cleveland Browns. After 3 seasons with the Browns, and a brief spell with the Buffalo Bills practice squad, he joined the New York Giants. With 177 punts for 8,069 yards in 49 games, Gillan is on a decent career spell. Especially this season, with 21 punts for 1,070 yards, it is a career-high 51 yards-per-punt for him. This places him 4th in the league, as Ryan Stonehouse, Tommy Townsend, and A. J. Cole place above him.

Jamie Gillan moved to the United States on a NATO visa. When the Royal Air Force stationed his father in Leonardtown, Maryland. But reportedly, he never changed it to a work visa when he joined the NFL, hence the present-day problems.

More importantly, the Giants will want to have Gillan on the team as they face their toughest opponents yet this Sunday: the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens may have a poorer record, but they have already defeated last year’s Super Bowl runner-up, the Cincinnati Bengals. And they put up a staunch fight against the Buffalo Bills. Which is one of the best teams in the league right now.

Calling in punters is probably not an ideal move for teams. Losing possession of the ball is never a sought-after play. But when it is the ‘Scottish Hammer’ punting, teams can rest easy. Even if the opponents do get possession, they’ll have to traverse a million miles to score.
