Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. has been grabbing headlines off late for his reluctance to hand over the #11 jersey to his team’s new quarterback, Carson Wentz. But when a similar situation arose with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trading for Tom Brady last season, the outcome was thoroughly different.
Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin, who used to wear the #12 jersey, didn’t have to think twice when it came to giving up his jersey number for the then-incoming quarterback.

During a segment of SiriusXM NFL Radio, the Buccaneers wide receiver talked about what exactly influenced his decision-making when it came to giving up his kit number for Tom Brady.
“The quarterback is definitely in charge of a lot of things when it comes to receivers. So I think it was a good move for me to start our relationship off on a good foot,” Godwin said.

Godwin further said that he hopes to receive the same treatment during the twilight years of his career.
“One thing I hope is that down the road, if I’m ever in that similar situation, that like a young guy would respect me and respect the work that I’ve done my entire career to let me get the number from him,” Godwin said.

Pittman not in the wrong
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR though pointed out that it isn’t necessary for Pittman to follow in his footsteps. At the end of the day though, he felt his decision was the right one to make.
“Maybe Carson wants a different number, and like maybe they discussed that. I can’t really be one to tell you if a guy’s making the right decision or not. But for me it was the best move for me to give Tom the number,” Godwin added.
