The previous season of the NFL saw a very unexpected AFC champion in Cincinnati Bengals. To claim the super bowl spot, they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, who were at one point 18 points ahead. Looking back at the match, Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes has shared the invaluable lesson he learned the hard way.

The Chiefs suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on what seemed like their third consecutive super bowl trip. Patrick started out hot but turned extremely cold as the match progressed. While remembering the day of the loss, the quarterback shared how he learned a very important lesson.

The player said, “You can’t relax. That was the biggest thing.” As the player further explained, the team had started to rest on their laurels while they were comfortably leading.” That’s something I’ll hold for the rest of my career,” explained Mahomes.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The Kansas City Chiefs started by scoring touchdowns on all of their first 3 drives. While the Cincinnati Bengals only managed to score a field goal, leading 21-3 at the start of the second quarter, it looked like there was nothing in the Chiefs’ way anymore.

“We got up a lot, and we just relaxed. Then (the Bengals) got the momentum, and we couldn’t turn it back on,” added Mahomes. In the following quarters, the Bengals managed to turn the tables and scored 18 unanswered points, which involved an exhilarating touchdown from Samaje Perine.

How did Patrick Mahomes fare in the game?

It was a hot and cold performance from the superstar quarterback. While starting out with 3 consecutive drives in the 1st quarter, Mahomes failed to score a single point for the rest of the match. Making some poor calls along the way as well.

Near the end of the 2nd quarter, the player threw a pass to Tyreek Hill, where they failed to even attempt a field goal as the clock ran out. He also held on to the ball for a bit too long at many plays and either got sacked or just wasted opportunities. The lowest point came when he threw an interception at the beginning of overtime. Patrick Mahomes looked completely out of his wits.

It is obvious that the team and the player would like to put that night behind them and set sail for future glory. It is just Patrick Mahomes’ 5th year in the league. Having blown everyone’s expectations, the quarterback has not shown any signs of slowing down. Learning these lessons is a part of the job and will only help the player to develop.
