The Atlanta Falcons are gearing up for their highly-anticipated showdown as they prepare to unleash their season opener against the Panthers this Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. With all the key pieces in their arsenal secured, the official depth chart has been dropped recently.

However, what makes this depth chart stand out is a rather curious twist. It showcases 12 offensive players listed as starters, along with a rather fancy position – the ‘J’ position. This unique ‘J’ position accounts for a key weapon, one the team can’t afford to miss, as they aim to end their ‘Super Bowl drought’ finally.

Falcons secure their key piece

This fancy ‘J’ title is a creative nod to the Joker, the iconic antagonist from Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, ‘The Dark Knight’ franchise. The title has been aptly designated to the powerhouse in the Falcons’ roster, Cordarrelle Patterson; a running back, wide receiver, and kick returner.

While Patterson might not be a ‘bad guy’ like the iconic villain, the 32-year-old’s versatility speaks volumes about his formidable nature. He boasts seven All-Pro selections, and four Pro Bowl appearances, and holds the record for the most kickoff return touchdowns in NFL history with nine. That’s quite the cheeky compliment to the versatility of this all-rounder, and the fancy title certainly grabbed attention when the NFL shared the news on their official Twitter handle.

As expected, this fancy title grabbed attention, with one user playfully taking a jab, throwing in the iconic dialogue “Whyyy sooo seriousss???” And it seems that there’s a bit of seriousness to it, as confirmed by Falcons head coach Arthur Smith. Even though it started as a silly joke, the 32-year-old Patterson is set to fill the shoes of every position group, including wide receivers, running backs, special teams, and even the offensive line.

The powerhouse in the fold

The Falcons, a $4.7 billion team owned by Arthur Blank, have never been able to lift the Lombardi Trophy even once. As the new season kicks off with quarterback Desmond Ridder, Coach Arthur Smith faces a crucial year. While rookie Bijan Robinson will support Ridder, Patterson undeniably remains a key weapon in the fold. Smith is not going to list Patterson as a third-string running back on his depth chart behind Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. “He’s not third-team anything”, Smith stated during an interview.

Meanwhile, the ‘Joker’ himself has embraced the title with open arms. The All-Pro has even changed his profile picture to the iconic villain’s image. As Patterson teases how he’s ready to strike, just as the befitting title implies, things are only getting more serious as the season kicks off.
