Grant Holloway has never slowed down over a hurdle. But lately, he just might be. On April 12, he came second to a youngling, Trey Cunningham, in the 110mH at the Tom Jones Invitational. 12 days later, on April 26, he landed oddly over a hurdle, and when he saw the writing on the wall, he pulled back to finish 10th at the Xiamen Diamond League. This is the second time after 2023 that the man has lost two on-the-trot races. And amid those piling worries for Holloway, is another one added now? Maybe!
Well, Grant Holloway has always been a hurdle favorite. But of late, is the man running out of steam? Well, he has an immaculate record, no questions there. But recently, when a national commentator listed his all-time top 15 hurdlers, Holloway landed in position 2. Yes, the man who is a 2x Olympic medalist champion landed second. So you wonder who was first? A man who himself has agreed that Holloway may be better than him! Shocking, right?
Anderson Emerole uploaded a YouTube video on April 27, where he gave his list. In that list, Grant Holloway ended up in the silver spot, while the first place was handed out to Allen Johnson. Well, Allen Johnson is a record-breaking hurdler, too. But Holloway’s resume? It’s just as statistically dominant! While both Johnson and Holloway have been World Champions, Holloway has done it thrice in a row- 2019, 2022, and 2023. But when it comes to the number game, Johnson has 4 world golds over Holloway’s three. Call that even? Well, Anderson’s not!

The national commentator’s words? They go, “So you know he ended up ranked number two but Grant Holloway like he is on the cusp of becoming the GOAT in my opinion on the cusp.” He then said that he thinks Holloway needs to “make one more move to become the absolute GOAT.” Anderson then mentioned, “Olympic gold medal in 1996 in the 110 meter hurdles. He [Allen Johnson] also has four world championship gold medals 1995 1997 2001 2003 and he has a bronze medal from 2005 as well So we’re talking about four gold medals at the World Championships something that no other athlete in history has been able to do. Yes, Grant Holloway, he has three gold medals.”

Anderson also cites that while Grant Holloway has three Indoor World 60mH golds, but Allen Johnson has four in title, 3 golds and one silver. Again the count is one more than Holloway, which establishes his dominance per Anderson. However, there is a lot we can counter this with. Johnson has four titles, but Holloway’s 60mH indoor titles make him the only man to win three successive indoor titles and the first ever to win three indoor and three outdoor world titles. Also, he has broken Allen Johnson’s record of 11 sub-13 times in the 110H as Holloway has 12, the only man to do so.

Grant Holloway is better than Allen Johnson?

Justin Gatlin said, “When you talk to legends in our sport—the David Oliver’s, Renaldo Nehemiah’s, the Allen Johnsons, Terrance Trammells—like when you ask them a question and say, hey who do you think the best hurdler is? All of them just say off the top, Grant Holloway is the best hurdler by far.”
Now that is a big claim! So if Johnson himself feels that, shouldn’t the ranking have been reversed? What do you think? Let us know below!
