‘Can’t Go to the UK and Play’- Phil Mickelson Staying Cautious Ahead of the British Open

The Open Championship or British Open is just a week away. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf. It is also the oldest major tournament in golf. And this year, it is all set to begin from July 15 at the Royal St. George’s Golf Course in England. Phil Mickelson won this tournament back in 2013 and he’ll be back with another attempt this year.
But because of the COVID-19 scare, the organizers have ordered players to strictly adhere to all the protocols. The R&A has laid down strict rules and regulations for players coming from different countries. The players are very much cautious about it and are taking all the precautions before traveling to England.

Phil Mickelson states the importance of staying cautious
Hideki Matsuyama recently tested positive for COVID-19 and had to withdraw from the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Phil Mickelson was his playing partner and he was asked about the consequences of it in a recent press conference, to which he replied:
“No. We were able to play in a very what we thought was a slow pace or relaxed pace. But we still had to wait. And that’s no big deal.”

“And like, I think it’s a concern on whether Hideki is able to play the British Open. Hopefully, he can, but we’re at the point now where if you were to come down with COVID like you can’t go to the UK and play. And that’s why we’re all being so careful,” Mickelson added.
“I mean, I’ve been vaccinated, but still, people that are vaccinated still get it, and we’re doing it myself. My brother Andrew gets in the people we’re with are trying to stay as isolated and as careful as we can,” he mentioned.

Phil Mickelson is currently playing at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He sneaked into the weekend at the last moment thanks to his birdie on the 17th hole in Round 2. But the left-hander is nowhere in contention to lift the trophy. So for the upcoming final round, it is crystal clear that he will look to gain as much confidence as possible before boarding a flight for The British Open.
