Kevin Kisner Calls Himself an ‘Underdog’ in Match Play

The 2019 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play champion Kevin Kisner is up for another sweet 16 battle. His fierce battle with three of his group mates, including Justin Thomas, has finally ended. And now it is time for the playoffs.

He had won against all three of his group members. However, Kisner sounded modest while talking to Sirius XM PGA Tour radio.

“You gotta be when they are hitting so far by you,” Kisner said. He was replying to the host of the radio when he asked the aggressive approach of the golfer this time. The 38-year-old American professional golfer is known for his wonderful gameplay at the WGC. Yet, he still kept his modesty throughout the interview.

“He’s a hell of a player,” Kisner praised Thomas after defeating him on the last group round. Even though he led the match from the beginning, Kisner thought Thomas had given him a really tough competition. “I’m just fortunate to come out on the right side,” he added.

It was the second time Thomas and Kisner had come face to face at a WGC event. The duo battled in the 2021 event, where Kisner crushed the then world no. 2 Thomas with his experience at the WGC. Kevin was the 2019 champion of the event, whereas he was the runner-up at the 2018 Match Play.

“He’s a heck of a player too,” Kisner commented on Adam Scott, who will be his opponent on his upcoming playoff. He further added, “I’m just gonna stick with what I do, and see what happens.”

When the radio host compared him to be a football coach who always thinks of his team as an “underdog,” Kisner was soon to reply. “I’m pretty much an underdog out there.”

The top two players, Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa have also advanced to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Kisner only ranks at 34 on the OWGR standings. The 38-year-old golfer is indeed a longshot while comparing their ranks. However, considering the positive results he has got from the WGC events, Kevin Kisner certainly doesn’t seem like an “underdog.”
