Serena Williams, Roger Federer, and Others Missing From Australian Open 2022 Entry List

After the conclusion of the 2021 season, all eyes turn to the new season. Whenever the new season approaches, the attention is on the first Grand Slam event of the year, the Australian Open.
The 2022 edition of the ‘Happy Slam’ will begin on the 17th of January and will extend till the 30th. Athletes from the ATP and WTA tours usually target the year’s first Grand Slam to get a good start to their campaigns. However, there are a few notable absentees from the entry list for next year’s AO.

Roger Federer, Serena Williams and others missing Australian Open 2022?
Players such as six-time champion Roger Federer, seven-time champion Serena Williams, Stan Wawrinka, two-time winner Venus Williams, and Bianca Andreescu will be missing from the Australian Open 2022. All these players have not been seen on a tennis court for a while.
Federer has not been seen since the Wimbledon Championships exit. He had to undergo another knee surgery and revealed that he would be out of action for many months. He has even stated that he might miss Wimbledon 2022 because of the injury.

On the other hand, his compatriot and 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka is still regaining his form after being on the sidelines for most of last season due to his foot injury. Andreescu has decided to withdraw as well to take a break after an injury riddled 2021 season.

The latest to withdraw was Serena Williams. She stated, “While this is never an easy decision to make, I am not where I need to be physically to compete. Melbourne is one of my favorite cities to visit and I look forward to playing at the AO every year. I will miss seeing the fans but am excited to return and compete at my highest level.”
Her elder sister, Venus Williams, is also missing from the entry list.
