Getting support from a reputed soccer player after making an unpopular claim can go two ways. However, we’re talking about when Cristiano Ronaldo sparked a huge controversy after downplaying France’s Ligue 1. Romelu Lukaku joined the bandwagon and backed his claims, as he praised the trending league as ‘one of the best’, while lauding the quality of soccer and transfers adopted by the Middle East. While many were skeptical after the European exile to the Saudi Pro League, Lukaku begs to differ.

As the SPL is set to acquire another storm of players, Romelu Lukaku added fuel to the fire by stating, “For me personally, I think in next two years it will be one of the best leagues in the world.” However, the Belgian star did not stop there and revealed the reasoning behind his statement.

The AS Roma striker said, “Because right now they are doing a lot…Bringing the bigger players into the league. You know the teams are improving; they are playing very good quality football.” This resonates with CR7’s earlier opinion that it will become one of the Top 3 leagues in the world. The SPL had spent a monstrous $957 million, second only to the English Premier League.

The 4 clubs backed by the Public Investment Fund were the major buyers, bringing in players like Neymar, Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, and many others. Additionally, these teams now dominate soccer in Asia, with Al Hilal and Al Nassr, being favorites to win the AFC Champions League. However, a few of the players, like Jordan Henderson, and Roberto Firmino could be leaving, which further challenges the bold claim made by Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo faced heavy retaliation for his Ligue 1 statement

Cristiano Ronaldo, after calling the SPL better than the MLS, has now called it finer than the French league, saying, In French league, I think you have two-three teams with a good level. In Saudi now, I think it’s more competitive.” However, this did not sit well with League 1’s fraternity, sparking a heavy backlash. A French coach challenged CR7 to come on the field and called him out for his opinion without playing in it ever.

One take at a time

Growing up in a sporting background, I found a passion for soccer through the remarkable 2002 World Cup-winning Brazilian football team. Watching the Premier League where Thierry Henry-starring ‘Invincible’ Gunners and Sir Alex Ferguson’s glorious Manchester United had ruled, I had my heart set on Arsenal. However, Ronaldo Nazario, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho are my favorite players and Lionel Messi is the GOAT.
