At this point, David Beckham’s admiration for the genius of Lionel Messi is well known. After all, the Inter Miami boss has credited the signing as his ‘gift to America and the MLS.” But other than the 8-time Ballon d’Or winner, who makes the list of David Beckham’s favorite soccer players? The former England star in a new podcast had to answer this question. And surprisingly, Beckham hasn’t opted for a single Heron star and instead named a pick that left many amused.

David Beckham chooses current and past Real Madrid #5s as his favorite players

In ‘This Life of Mine‘ podcast hosted by James Corden, David Beckham indulged in a quick-fire round. The former soccer star shared a snippet via his Instagram story and the first question posed to him was, “Favourite footballer that isn’t Messi.” The talk show figure was expecting the answer in 3 seconds but the Inter Miami boss didn’t even need a second as replied, “Zidane and Jude Bellingham.” Corden spotted a pattern as he replied, “Two number 5’s from Real Madrid.”

David Beckham’s respect for Zinedine Zidane is well-documented. The pair dazzled at the Bernabeu between 2003-2006. This stint even resulted in the English icon lauding Zidane as the ‘best player’ he’s ever played with. A huge claim considering that Beckham has lined up with some absolute titans like Paul Scholes, Eric Cantona, Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo Nazario, and Figo.

Beckham’s current favorite Jude Bellingham emerged as an interesting choice. The youngster has scored 20 goals from midfield this season and has the potential to etch his name alongside the greats. Notably, Zidane also happens to be the 20-year-old’s idol. In fact, Zidane and Bellingham do share a lot of characteristics in common. Could that have been a trait that influenced Beckham’s choice? Might be, but not entirely.

On the occasion Lionel Messi won his 8th Ballon d’Or, Jude Bellingham made his country proud. The English starlet was crowned, the winner of the Kopa Trophy, the prize for the best U-21 player. The English midfielder beat the likes of Jamal Musiala and Pedri to win the award. David Beckham was impressed and said via Instagram, “Proud moment for Jude and his family.”

Also, the English national team hasn’t won a major trophy in a long time, 1966 to be precise. However, the Englishman believes the current group with Bellingham has a real chance to end the trophy drought. He said, “I think that we have a real opportunity with young players like Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, and the other players we have on the team.” If Bellingham continues to score at the rate of a striker, England will be a force to reckon with.
