In 2020, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney surprised the soccer fanbase by buying Wrexham A.F.C. Wrexham is a soccer club based in Wales. After the entire COVID saga, Wrexham and many other clubs in the National League were struggling financially.

The American celebrity duo came as saviors for the Welsh soccer club. However, the takeover path was not the easiest. The American duo had to first convince the official fan club of Wrexham before the takeover. For new owners, they put such a process in place because the previous owners had financially run the club into the ground and left.

In the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, Reynolds said, “I’ve only been owner of a football club for a short time. But so far, I’ve found it to be very time-consuming, emotionally exhausting, financially idiotic, utterly addictive”.

However, Wrexham A.F.C. had a much better second season under the American duo. Wrexham finished 2 on the points table and qualified for the playoffs. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get past Grimsby Town in the semi-finals. Wrexham also put on a show for the fans in the FA Trophy.
