Cristiano Ronaldo is renowned for his unwavering commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Even at the age of 38, the prolific striker maintains a disciplined existence. Forget junk food, the Portuguese superstar doesn’t even touch alcohol. Despite vowing not to drink a single drop of booze his whole life, an ‘unforgettable evening’ once led Ronaldo to break that solemn promise.

This personal vow originated from the tragic death of his father due to alcoholism. But even after such claims, what led CR7 to digest a potion he always abstained from?

Rules are meant to be broken. And when the occasion is to celebrate a victory then it’s perfectly normal. Surprisingly, sober for life Ronaldo once broke the most important rule of his life; drinking alcohol. Back in 2019, Ronaldo sat for an exclusive interview with Diletta Leotta on DAZN. Among all the questions, the striker was asked to talk about the most significant trophy in his trophy showcase.

He said, “The title of European Champion with Portugal is the most important prize I have ever won.” While he continued with his answer, it led to the revelation of an interesting anecdote. “It was an incredible, unforgettable evening: I cried, I laughed, I suffered, I shouted, I got drunk… There is no laughable! During that match, I cried so much that I was dehydrated: So, at the end of the match, during the celebrations, I drank a glass of champagne and it immediately went to my head. I never drink, but that day was so special, the most important trophy ever.”

The 2016 Euro win with his beloved nation is the most important trophy of his career. However, what raised eyebrows is his post-celebration decision to consume alcohol. Indeed, it’s quite an unheard-of tale for CR7. Ultimately, he broke a long-standing vow in the midst of celebrating a victory for his country. But it was a well-deserved way to commemorate the win.

Notably, the reason he doesn’t drink alcohol is because his father, José Dinis Aveiro, was an alcoholic, whom he lost 14 years ago. Ronaldo’s sister gave a backstory behind his vow.

The origin of CR7’s abstention from alcohol

After Ronaldo made it to the Guinness World Record for making 200 caps for Portugal, his sister Katie Averio congratulated him with a long paragraph. In her account, Katia mentioned that their mother, Dolores, initially contemplated having an abortion when she was expecting Cristiano due to the family’s dire financial circumstances and their struggle to provide for their growing family. However, something changed Dolores’ mind, and she chose to raise the baby.

Katia later disclosed that their mother’s motivation stemmed from a desire to prevent Cristiano from following in the footsteps of their alcoholic father. In an Instagram post featuring a picture of Ronaldo, Katia wrote, “He got it into his head that he wasn’t going to be like the shadows. That he wouldn’t be like his father who surrendered to alcohol – and that’s why Cristiano never drank a drop of alcohol.” Certainly, to this day, Ronaldo doesn’t drink, except for the blurry, possibly drunk, and happy night in Paris in 2016.
