Following her high-profile split from Gerard Pique, Shakira has been in the news lately. The Columbian star sealed a long-spanning controversial incident after agreeing to pay $8 million to avoid a prison sentence. It will help her avoid a trial in Barcelona after failing to pay an enormous amount in an income tax dispute.

Gerard Pique and Shakira ended their 11-year relationship in 2022. The Colombian star recently received multiple awards at the Latin Grammy Awards for an apparent diss track on Pique. Ironically, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique’s fierce club rival, presented her with the award. Yet, she has another issue now in the tax fraud case with a favorable outcome.

Between 2012 and 2014, there was a dispute surrounding Shakira’s residency status. As per Spanish law, people living in Spain for more than six months are eligible for taxes. Shakira disputed the matter, which led to prosecutors filing a case against her, accusing her of defrauding US $15.8 million.

The saga recently concluded, as per BBC, as Shakira agreed to pay a fine of $8 million, the failure of which would have seen her spend eight years in prison while also being fined $26 million. It looks like Shakira has made the proper choice regarding her family situation.

They fined Shakira 50% of the total amount she owed to the Spanish government, which tallied to $8 million. The prosecutor’s office also alleged that Shakira bought a property in Barcelona, which she used as a family home. As per reports, Shakira was willing to go on trial after rejecting a deal from the prosecutors. In fact, one of her lawyers even told reporters that the decision was motivated by personal issues. However, it looks like Shakira decided against taking a trial.
