While Lionel Messi and Inter Miami prepped up for their fixture against LAFC, the Miami-based club faced an unusual problem. David Beckham‘s soccer club decided to play a role in a hotel worker’s union strike over a significant cause. The staff of the same hotel where Messi and Co. were supposed to move into for the weekend put forward a request and the soccer veteran’s team stood in solidarity with them.

Despite winning their first-ever piece of silverware, the Herons still have much more work to do in the MLS. Currently languishing in the bottom half of the table, the club will strive to finish in a respectable mid-table spot at the very least.

Inter Miami recently needed to make a few tweaks to the weekend plan. The staff and players of the club were going to check in at the Santa Monica hotel. However, the workers of the hotel weren’t going to be on duty because of their strike. Hours before the soccer club traveled, it received phone calls from Unite Here Local 11 to move away. The hotel staff were protesting for higher pay.

Bellmen, cooks, housekeepers, and servers joined thousands of other hotel workers on the picket lines. Inter Miami’s staff were quick to understand the depth of the situation. The club decided to move its reservations to another hotel for this weekend. The protesting workers union jointly released a statement thanking the World Cup winner and his club for their support.

The statement read, “Thank you to the great Lionel Messi and his teammates for agreeing to move from the hotel and stand in solidarity with striking workers!”. Undoubtedly, it was quite a statement and supportive move by the Miami-based club. The club didn’t issue an official press release acknowledging the matter. In a few days, Messi will face LAFC in the MLS and look to extend his unbeaten run.
