In the high-stakes world of soccer rivalries, clashes on and off the pitch often fuel the fire of competition. One such rivalry was between two iconic managers, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger. In a podcast, the Portuguese manager mocked the French manager for thrashing his team 6-0 in Wenger’s 1000th game as Arsenal boss.

The London rivalry of Chelsea and Arsenal has always been one to watch out for every season. However, it went to the next level, as Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger managed the Blues and Gunners, respectively. In the podcast with Chelsea legend Mikel John Obi, the Portuguese manager relived the engaging rivalry in those days in the Premier League. He stated, “The only thing that Arsène Wenger cannot forget is his match number 1000, which is a match to remember and to celebrate: Chelsea 6, Arsenal 0.” It was a match to bypass for the former Gunners boss.

The fans also remembered the game for the significant mistake of the referee in the first half. In the 14th minute, Alex Oxlade Chamberlin handled the ball inside the box. The referee correctly gave a penalty. However, due to mistaken identity, he gave the red card to defender Kieran Gibbs. It opened the gates for Chelsea to dismantle Arsenal as Wenger looked gloomy on the touchline. They scored four goals in the first half and added two more in the second half. It was the biggest win in the London derby in Premier League history.

It is not the first or last time Jose Mourinho dominated Arsene Wenger in his managerial career. The statistics suggest that the Portuguese manager had an advantage over the French manager during their face-off.

Mourinho had the upper hand over Arsene Wenger

The former Arsenal boss faced off against the former Manchester United boss 19 times in his managerial career. However, in these 19 games, Wenger could only win two games against his compatriot. He also managed seven draws against him. The other ten games saw Jose Mourinho register a win against his rival during his time at Chelsea and Manchester United.

During their face-offs, the Portuguese manager called Arsene Wenger “the specialist in failure” adding fuel to the fire. Therefore, it is not surprising that soccer fans expected heated arguments during these games.
