Kylian Mbappe had a night to remember against Gibraltar. The 24-year-old attacker scored 3 goals and made 2 assists as France romped to a 14-0 victory. This marked the 17th career hat trick for the French superstar. Yet, the most telling news of the day was something even bigger. The Frenchman has become the youngest player to score 300 career goals by surpassing the one and only Lionel Messi.

Kylian Mbappe is having one of his best seasons ever. He also scored a scintillating hattrick in his club’s last match and was strangely subject to criticism from manager Luis Enrique. However, it doesn’t appear to have dampened his spirits as he continues racking up goals for France. Perhaps, this might be the season where the lethal striker finally wins the Ballon d’Or.

In 2023, Kylian Mbappe succeeded Hugo Loris as the national team captain, highlighting his importance to the team. The match against Gibraltar showed exactly why Mbappe was the deserving candidate. He opened his account with a penalty while the second goal was a neat finish. The third goal was a long-range stunner which lobbed the goalkeeper, also marking his 300th career goal. He achieved this landmark in 24 years and 10 months, thus becoming the youngest player to do so. The record was previously held by Lionel Messi who achieved the landmark in 25 years and 4 months in 2012.

The Frenchman’s statistics at 24 are quite staggering. By his 24th birthday, the PSG man scored 253 goals and made 132 assists in 363 games (70 minutes per goal or assist). Lionel Messi on the other hand had 197 goals and 84 assists in 326 games (88 minutes per goal or assist).

It is evident that Kylian Mbappe has been performing at a superlative level. Yet, he hasn’t gotten the recognition his talent deserves and his highest Ballon d’Or finish is in 3rd place. Perhaps he should take the advice of his countryman who knows the secret to getting more acclaim and recognition.

Christian Karembeu, former French player stated that Mbappe needs to leave PSG to win the Ballon d’Or. He said, “Kylian I think that he already won many titles in France. I think he understands that to be or to win a Ballon d’Or you need to go to a bigger club”. Karembeu also highlighted Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who together won 10 Ballon d’Or titles while playing for Barcelona and Real Madrid.

It’s no secret that playing for elite European clubs brings more prestige and recognition. For example, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Juventus are among the top 5 clubs with the most Ballon d’Or winners. Hence, Karembeu’s opinion carries a lot of substance. Perhaps, this could be Kylian Mbappe’s final season in Paris as he has not yet initiated any contract renewal talks.
