Lionel Messi is hoping to win his 8th Ballon d’Or after helping Argentina win the FIFA World Cup. He could become the first soccer player to win the award 8 times. Erling Haaland is in the race to win it for the 1st time after having a 52-goal season. Amidst all the drama, a USMNT legend believes that Lionel Messi will win the Ballon d’Or over Erling Haaland.

Janusz Michallik speaking on ESPN  has said, “Lionel Messi’s gonna get it. I’m okay with the fact that he’s going to get it because you know winning the World Cup puts a bow on his incredible career, because this is going to be the last time that Lionel Messi is gonna win that probably in his career. I don’t see it, it’s not because he’s in the United States but partially it is right because it doesn’t carry the weight no matter how many trophies next season he wins.”

Pep Guardiola’s funny two Ballon d’Or take

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was asked about his opinion on the deserved winner of Ballon d’Or. He said that both Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland deserve to be winners. Pep also made a comment that there should be a Ballon d’Or only for the Argentine and another for top players like Erling Haaland to give a chance to every soccer player to win the award. However, the point is Messi is going to find it extremely difficult to win it next year.

For Lionel Messi to even have a chance next year, he will have to possibly win every trophy in America. His performances in the Copa America will also play a key role. Whereas, soccer players like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe will now compete for the European cups and titles. The Norwegian is already a goal machine under the management of Pep Guardiola. So he is going to only get better and score more goals to make his claim for the next year more concrete.
