The roster includes some of the biggest stars in the women’s soccer scene from experienced veterans like Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe to upcoming talents like Trinity Rodman and Alyssa Thompson. Among them, 22-year-old Sophia Smith, who is the daughter of NBA legend Kenny Smith, has made it to the big stage after a successful stint with NWSL side Portland Thorns. However, this wouldn’t have been possible if not for one life-changing decision she made, in which her father had some concerns.

What many might not know is that Smith’s journey to soccer started with basketball. She also played for the varsity basketball team. However, at the age of 14 Sophia, decided to leave basketball to pursue soccer full-time. Sophia transitioned from basketball to soccer but her father found it hard to accept the news.
After hearing about this, Kenny Smith told his daughter, “Man, Soph, you could really be something in basketball”. Sophia, however at the time responded confidently, “I’m going to be special in soccer”. Smith’s belief in herself proved to be right as she rapidly rose to fame in the soccer world.
