The altercation was initiated by Uruguay, with Manuel Ugarte making gestures towards both Enzo Fernandez and Rodrigo De Paul. Additionally, Messi also indulged by shoving Uruguayan defender Mathias Olivera as he got into a heated argument with De Paul. Others on the pitch intervened when the situation worsened and turned into an ugly altercation between the two players.

After the match, Uruguay’s star midfielder, Federico Valverde, commented on the incident. He said, “Argentina is a great rival. They have great players, especially Lionel. They have shown it before, during and after the World Cup. They are one of the best national team in the world, if not the best.” The midfielder insists whatever happens on the pitch shall end there only. “It was a clásico but it stays all on the field, that’s the most important thing,” he concluded.

Clearly, in Messi’s eyes, the gestures from Manuel Ugarte seemed wrong at that moment. The ugly brawl must have added to his frustration over Argentina’s loss. Moreover, his last match with Angel Di Maria in Argentina and a sweet reunion with Luis Suarez also couldn’t have had the happiest ending, as he must have anticipated them to be. Any thoughts?
