It has been almost a year since Brazilian legend Marcelo left his club for almost his whole career, Real Madrid. Last year in June, the club made it clear to the fans that Marcelo would no longer be playing for Madrid. In a recent talk, Marcelo had some words for the Argentine magician, Lionel Messi.

About a year after leaving Europe, he divulges on how he felt playing against the World Cup winner. Apart from Messi, he also talked about playing against Barcelona as a team, and the importance of El Clasico.

The legendary Brazilian defender played 386 matches for the Spanish giants since he joined the club back in 2007. He was one of the team’s key pieces and formed a very reliable defensive force with names like Sergio Ramos and others. He plays in the Brazilian Serie A for his first team Fluminense.

Marcelo talked about Lionel Messi

In a recent talk with the Athletic, Marcelo talked about playing against Lionel Messi and Barcelona in their prime. He has been a part of the most intense rivalry in soccer history, and Marcelo has given apt respect to El Clasico many times. This talk was no different. However, him talking about Messi, got many fans by surprise.

He said, “Messi is incredible, the toughest opponent I’ve ever faced. We all know the quality he has even now, aged 35, and before it was the same. El Clasico has always been one of the best games to watch and play. I was lucky enough to have been featured in one of the best eras of Clasicos. But it wasn’t just Messi, there were other players who were also incredible.

From his words, it is clear that the man has nothing but respect for Argentine pride. This, however, is an ironic statement for many fans. He shared a very close bond with Messi’s archrival. He played with Cristiano Ronaldo during all of his time in Spain.

When Ronaldo called Marcelo his brother

When Marcelo left Real Madrid, fans were shocked. The Real Madrid legends and former stars came out to wish him luck. One such name was Cristiano Ronaldo. On his appreciation post, Ronaldo wrote, “More than a teammate, a brother that football gave me.” This statement is enough to reflect the bond Marcelo had with Ronaldo and other players at Bernabeu.
