Last night, soccer fans got to witness the ‘Ezelî Rekabet’ or the ‘Eternal Rivalry’ between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. While the match surprisingly ended in a stalemate, the post-match narrative has shifted away from the final score to focus on the players, particularly Galatasaray’s Mauro Icardi, who left the field with a surprising ‘black eye.’

This startling incident transpired during a critical moment in the game when Icardi was fervently seeking to find the back of the net. However, the soccer world finds itself divided into two perspectives regarding the origin of his black eye. One school of thought insists it occurred when the player’s face collided with the goalpost, while the opposing viewpoint claims it resulted from a punch delivered by an opponent. So, what exactly happened?

Now, let’s talk about the first possibility that he clashed with the goalpost. Taking a look at the clip below, Mauro Icardi can be seen running at a fast pace as the cross came inside the box. However, the pass went above everyone’s head, with Icardi getting a slight push from Fenerbahçe defender Alexander Djiku. Sadly, the former Inter Milan star lost his control and, ergo, slammed his face on the post. The bar was literally shaking when he collided!

Speaking about the second instance, while Galatasaray was trying to play a cross, Icardi was tussling with Djiku again in the penalty box. Unfortunately, as the cross went behind the line, Icardi was somehow punched by Djiku, and the Argentinian went down. Additionally, no penalty was given for the challenge to the away side. Meanwhile, it’s possible that both instances could have collectively caused Icardi’s black eye.

Yet, either of the situations can be spine-chilling to watch. Notably, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray flared their rivalries outside the pitch over Icardi’s black eye.

After Icardi posted the pictures of his bruise, Galatasaray released a statement, saying, “VAR room and 26 cameras cannot see and we feel ashamed on their behalf for this happening. We hope that one day those who brought Turkish football to this point will be ashamed. Those who want justice for themselves continued to manipulate Turkish football on every channel.”

However, Fenerbahçe was quick enough to respond to Galatasaray and Icardi’s social media posts. They claimed that both the team and the player are “Trying to create victimization through the player hitting the goal post,” and they “leave it to the discretion of the public.” Furthermore, Fenerbahçe star Edin Dzeko also made fun of Icardi. It remains to be seen how the Super Lig officials react to this incident.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
