After the wrapping up of the 2021 season, the focus of the tennis world has shifted to 2022. Ahead of next season, there has been an interesting development at one of the most prestigious events of the tennis calender. Organizers of the Mutua Madrid Open have decided to sell the tournament to global management giants, IMG.

The Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament has entered into an agreement to be acquired by global sports, events, and talent management company, IMG. Ion Tiriac, the Billionaire former owner of the tournament, made the decision to go ahead with this new partnership.

On signing the deal, the official at IMG released a statement, “The Mutua Madrid Open will be a strong addition to our global events portfolio and tennis business, which will now boast two of the three mandatory combined events on both tours.”

Mutua Madrid Open under new ownership ahead of the 2022 season 

IMG are growing their stake in the tennis circuit. After acquiring the rights of the Miami Open, they have now associated themselves with the Mutua Madrid Open. In the upcoming season, it will be the 20th edition of the event. It will be held from the 26th of April and will end on the 8th of May. 

Reflecting on the 2021 season, German tennis star Alexander Zverev won the tournament. During the event, he beat the likes of Nadal, Thiem, and Berrettini in the final. The most successful player of the event has been none other than Nadal, winning it previously on five occasions with rivals Federer and Djokovic on three wins each.
