The tennis world is going through a storm lately. And it all started a few weeks ago when World No.1 Novak Djokovic tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Not only him but his colleagues in the Adria Tour, Grigor Dimitrov, and Borna Coric, too contracted the deadly disease. Nole’s wife Jelena and his coach Goran Ivanisevic also weren’t spared. Although the Djokovic couple later tested negative, controversy is still in the air. And now, it’s Frances Tiafoe who became the latest tennis player to test COVID-19 positive.

Tiafoe was playing at the All-American team Cup when his viral infection was detected. As soon as his results came out positive, he removed himself from the tournament. As per the statement released by the tournament authorities, Christopher Eubanks has replaced the 22-year old American. They also claimed to initiate deep cleaning and sanitization procedures at the event site. However, the tennis fraternity is surprised by the organizers’ decision to carry on with the tournament even though one of their active players contracted the infection.

The 41-year old Croatian Ivo Karlovic criticized the tournament organizers. He tweeted, “So Tiafoe tests positive to Covid19 in Atlanta and the tournament continues. Thoughts?”

In response, former Indian tennis star Somdev Devvarman added a sarcastic comment. The 35-year old tweeted, “Novak was wrong and his tournament needed to be shut down asap. But somehow tennis in America is more important. Cause it is. Covid is under control there. Don’t you read the news? Come on Ivo Karlovic This is all for the fans and you know it. And for the betterment of tennis.”

Devvarman’s comments’ sarcasm could be felt by the fact that the USA is recording more COVID-19 cases every day than any other country. Their overall numbers are approaching 3 million while the toll stands at over 132,500. Amid such a horror, the US Open is about to start later in August.
