“Kokkinakis Banged Your Girlfriend” – When Nick Kyrgios Sledged Stan Wawrinka

The Aussie lad, Nick Kyrgios, is not new to heated clashes in tennis. Be it hitting his opponents with balls, smashing his racquets, mouthing off at match officials, or losing his cool, Kyrgios is no stranger to any of it. Unsurprisingly, he often gets penalized with hefty fines for all this misbehavior. And he has managed to seek the attention of the global tennis audience in a negative way.
One of his heated exchanges came at Rogers Cup 2015 while he was playing against Stan Wawrinka in the second round. At the beginning of the second set, with an on-court microphone switched on, Kyrgios made a crude and personal comment on Wawrinka’s then-girlfriend, Donna Vekic, and his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
He addressed the Swiss Grand Slam champion saying, “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that mate.”

Back then, Wawrinka was dating the Croatian, Vekic, after his divorce with wife Ilham Vuilloud.
During the match, Wawrinka wasn’t aware of Nick’s filthy remark. However, as the microphones picked it up, the Aussie’s remarks went globally viral and Stan found out about it once he stepped off the court.

The men exchanged the first two sets. In the deciding one, Wawrinka was trailing by 4-0 and was forced to retire due to his back injury. The Swiss star gave him a friendly handshake at the net and was unaware of what had gone viral on Twitter.
During the on-court interview, Nick Kyrgios didn’t apologize for the comments. “He was getting a bit lippy with me,” he said. “Kind of in the heat of the moment, I don’t know. I just said it.”
Former World Number three Wawrinka was disappointed about the incident when he found out about it. “I just hope the ATP takes big measures against him,” Wawrinka told L’Équipe. “He’s young but that’s no excuse … every match, he behaves very badly.”

Wawrinka also shared that Kyrgios tried to avoid him in the locker rooms.

Kyrgios later apologized for his misbehavior on the court and regretted the same. “My comments were made in the heat of the moment and were unacceptable on many levels. In addition to the private apology I’ve made, I would like to make a public apology as well. I take full responsibility for my actions and regret what happened,” Nick posted.
The officials slapped Kyrgios with a fine of $10,000 for his lewd comments.
