13-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal gets set for the season finale at the ATP World Tour Finals. This happens to be one of the few tournaments the Spaniard has never managed to win. His fellow rivals Roger Federer (6 titles) and Novak Djokovic (5 titles) have had their fair share of success here.
Notably, this annual London event is held indoors. Over the years, indoor courts have worked against Nadal.
It’s very difficult to find a weak spot in a player of Rafa‘s caliber. That’s why it’s surprising that he hasn’t enjoyed playing in indoor surroundings during his career.

Patrick Mouratoglou talks about Rafael Nadal and indoor courts
Speaking on this issue, tennis expert and coach, Patrick Mouratoglou said, “What makes him so different and so difficult to beat on other surfaces, he doesn’t have that advantage indoors on hard courts because the bounce is low. There is a reason why on hardcourts indoors, the bounce is lower than on hardcourts outdoors. The surface is named hardcourts in both cases, but it’s not the same surface at all.”
Adding to the earlier statements, he said, “He is a very good competitor now indoors on hard. There are guys who are still better than him on that surface.”

Nadal has a very unique style of playing tennis. Unlike most of the players, he likes getting under the ball so that he can hit it with his preferred topspin shot. With the bounce being low, it works much against his liking.
