UFC is going to witness the return of its symbolic BMF title! At UFC 291, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje step into the Octagon with the symbolic UFC title on the line. This announcement has reignited discussions about the inaugural BMF title fight and the legacy it holds in fans’ minds.

The first BMF title fight between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal captivated fans worldwide. It was a clash of two ferocious fighters, who fans know for their gritty styles and never-back-down attitudes. However, controversy struck when the doctor intervened and stopped the fight due to a cut sustained by Diaz. Many argued that the fight ended prematurely, leaving Diaz and fans alike unsatisfied with the outcome.

Fast forward to the present, and Nate Diaz finds himself outside of the UFC. On August 5th, Diaz fights Jake Paul in a boxing match. While boxing sounds like an exciting route for Diaz, fans have no idea about his plans after this fight. Time and again, Diaz has made it clear that he will return to the UFC somewhere in the near future. Recently, UFC legend Chael Sonnen discussed this in his new video.

Chael Sonnen about Nate Diaz and the BMF belt

Sonnen raised questions about Diaz‘s return to the UFC, suggesting that he may not immediately jump into a welterweight title bout upon his potential comeback. Further, Sonnen pointed out that even during Diaz‘s active years, talks of him competing for the welterweight title were not prevalent. This prompts speculation about Diaz‘s intentions and which championship he would pursue.

“I don’t know that he would qualify to walk right into a welterweight (title) match. Even when he was there, those talks weren’t going on.”

Sonnen‘s insights lead to the intriguing possibility that if Diaz emerges victorious against Jake Paul, he may not be eyeing a traditional weight division championship. Instead, Diaz may only have one title in mind – the BMF belt that eluded him in his previous encounter. According to Diaz, the fight abruptly ended, preventing him from securing the BMF championship.

“He would only be coming back for one Championship. His championship, the championship which eluded him because according to him it was cut short by a doctor who never should have stopped the fight after 15 minutes. It was scheduled for 25 and I’m of course talking about the BMF.”
