UFC legend has revealed a UFC PPV earning, and it’s nowhere near the fans would have expected! According to Chael Sonnen, he walked away with just $35K in his name after a hyped-up fight. The fight was UFC 148 back in the year 2012. The fight according to Sonnen was, “the biggest that our industry had had at that time”. The UFC legend went up against another beast in his weight division at the time. The opponent was none other than the deadly Anderson Silva. Although the fight was the biggest fight of the time, Sonnen only walked away with $35K because he was not a champion. The retired UFC fighter was on a regular contract.

Sonnen mentioned that a Bantamweight fighter Dominick Cruz would’ve bagged $3.6M in one night! The fighter could have become a millionaire in just one night. The reason for the same was the fact that he was on a different contract than Sonnen. ‘The Dominator’ held a title at the time he went up against his all-time rival Urijah Faber. Although the fight in UFC 148 never happened due to technical reasons, Sonnen still went ahead to expose the baggage that Cruz could have claimed.
UFC’s pay-per-view system
Sonnen told his viewers how even though some of the fighters get loads of money for their fights, not a lot of them can draw even flies to them. And despite the fact that the fight may not be famous, the champion contract remains intact. Even though Sonnen wasn’t a champion at the time of his fight with Silva in UFC 148, the fight gained immense fame. Despite the popularity, the PPV system remained intact as usual. “I got $35K, and I get another $35K if I beat him that’s just where I was at,” said Sonnen on the state of his own payment.

Dominick Cruz that night was under the privileged contract and would have gotten paid in millions. Due to his last-moment ACL, Cruz had to pull out of the fight and it ended up getting canceled. Sonnen calculates, according to him, “The way that Dom’s math would’ve worked… that would’ve paid $3.6M.” The reason why the Sonnen–Silva was a success was the wrestler’s trash talk. The pre-fight game was going strong between the two. This led fans into an amazing fight. Even though Sonnen lost, he was able to put up an excellent and exciting fight.
Is this UFC system fair to all?
Although there is nothing particularly wrong with the pay-per-view system, it still looks unfair. However, the payment system only encourages better performance from all athletes while appreciating the ones who give their best.
