For a short while, it seemed like Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje were on a collision course. Both lightweight stalwarts had won their previous bouts and did not have a fight booked. Fans were eager to see the violence the pair would dish out if they stepped into the cage against each other for a second time.

However, those fight talks have lost their traction for the time being. Interestingly, Gaethje revealed recently that there were plans for him to coach against Dustin Poirier on TUF. Unfortunately for the fans, those ideas did not pan out either.

Now, Gaethje’s manager and Dominance MMA’s head Ali Abdelaziz has come forward to give his two cents about the Gaethje-Poirier situation. The Egyptian was doing an interview with ‘The Schmo’ when he shed light on the brief discussion that happened around Gaethje vs. Poirier 2.

Ali Abdelaziz on Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje TUF talks

A few days ago, Justin Gaethje revealed that Dustin Poirier had turned down an offer to coach against him on The Ultimate Fighter. ‘The highlight’ held no ill will against Poirier for rejecting the offer, and added he would have done the same. He also added that he was shifting his focus to a title fight.

Commenting on the same, Abdelaziz said, “Listen- Gaethje- we got [an] offer to do The Ultimate Fighter with Poirier. I respect Dustin Poirier. I think he’s one of the legends in the sport but it wasn’t the right time for him. Gaethje went and fought Fiziev and beat him.”

It seems like all parties were respectful in negotiating the plans that failed to come together. Meanwhile, Abdelaziz also mentioned how the focus in the 155 lbs division was now on the upcoming Charles Oliveira vs. Beneil Dariush bout. This bout will determine the number one contender for the champion Islam Makhachev.

Both Poirier and Gaethje lost their title fights against Oliveira. To add to the similarity, both of them tapped to a rear-naked choke from the Brazilian. Since then, Poirier has beaten Michael Chandler and Gaethje beat Rafael Fiziev.

Currently, without fights, do you think these lightweights should do their rematch? ‘The Diamond’ won their first meeting in 2018 via a TKO. Do you think Gaethje should try and get it back? Will the UFC make this fan-favorite fight?
