The masterclass performance shown by Alex Pereira against Jiri Prochazka at UFC 295 was enough to win fans over. The Brazilian showed dominance on the feet against one of the deadliest finishers in MMA. It was undoubtedly a technical masterpiece that led to a second-round KO against Jiri Prochazka.
It hasn’t been long since Pereira joined the promotion, but his resume speaks for itself. The performances he’s had against the big names have made a lot of fans jump onto his bandwagon. UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley might be one of them.

Sean O’Malley, in a recent podcast, complimented Pereira’s performance against Prochazka. The UFC bantamweight champion is a masterful striker in his own right. Pereira’s performance amazed ‘Suga’, which led him to make an intriguing matchup for Pereira to fight Jon Jones in light heavyweight. O’Malley states, “Jon Jones and Pereira at 205 would have been crazy.”
O’Malley compliments the ground game of Pereira as well, stating, “He’s done so good when he’s taken down, serving and getting back up. Remember Yan was on his back for 4 minutes?” However, Tim Welch did not think this match-up made much sense. Welch states, “Jon Jones though, he’s walking around 250, he would probably f*** Pereira up.”

Welch isn’t wrong; Jon Jones is the bigger fighter among the two at the moment. ‘Bones’s grappling is also way superior to that of Pereira’s. But what if both fighters fight at 205? Would Jones really have that much of an advantage?

Regardless of whether or not they fight at the same weight, Jon Jones would undoubtedly be superior when it comes to wrestling. Pereira has only recently transitioned to MMA and was unable to stop takedowns from Jan Blachowicz and Jiri Prochazka. However, Pereira was able to minimize damage from the bottom.
Then again, Jones has never fought a striker as skilled as Pereira before. He had close fights with Thiago Santos and Dominic Reyes, who aren’t anywhere near as good as Pereira. If Pereira keeps the fight on the feet, his leg kicks will eventually catch up to Jones. So it is quite impossible to say who will come out on top unless they fight each other.

Unfortunately, the odds of that fight happening are close to impossible. But we might get something else. Pereira called out Israel Adesanya after his win at UFC 295. If that fight happens again, who would be your pick? Let us know in the comments below.
