We can draw the Irish and English boundaries on the Great Atlantic, thereby giving rise to a great deal of confusion. However, no Irishman could ever call England his home. Such was the case with Conor McGregor, half a decade ago. Without a doubt, the Irish are proud of their origins and are great patriots, indeed. Nonetheless, calling an Irishman English could lead to one of the most intense and heated arguments ever.

Back in August 2017, Conor McGregor displayed intense confidence and bravery as he ventured into a boxing ring against Floyd Mayweather. Prior to the fight, when a reporter mistakenly said England was “kind of like home” for McGregor, the ‘Notorious’ couldn’t help but snap back.

The ‘Notorious’ was in Brooklyn and heading to England before his bout against Mayweather. That was when a reporter caught him off guard when he said, “You’re getting ready to get back to England; which is kind of like home to you.” This is in fact one of the phrases that enrage proud Irishmen. 

Without a doubt, McGregor quickly responded to the reporter and educated the man with a bit of geography. He proudly replied, “I’m an Irishman. It’s separated by water.” Although he was in fact provoked; the former double champion kept his cool and continued in a calm voice, remembering the surplus love he received from the English.

The ‘Notorious’ added, “But I mean, English people have always been good to me. I’ve fought in England many times, I’ve been to England many times. They’ve always been close to Ireland and I look forward to going back.” Nonetheless, it is not untrue when he said many of the UFC fans cheering for him hail from England.

Laura Sanko once mistook the Dubliner to be an Englishman

Following the events of UFC 282, the famed journalist and former mixed martial artist Laura Sanko had a terrible slip of the tongue. The MMA journalist made a list of the UK’s top five active fighters. Surprisingly, Conor McGregor seemed to have slithered into the list.

However, the UFC commentator and former UFC champion, Daniel Cormier, enquired Sanko whether Ireland was in the United Kingdom. But, the journalist replied, “Yes, yes.” Finally, DC corrected the error and said that McGregor was not from the UK.
