Conor McGregor has announced making his comeback this year. And ever since, that has been a hot topic. But as big of a name as he is, there are several elements of his comeback fight that need to be taken into account, and a lot of work remains to be done. One of the key questions is, who will face ‘The Notorious’ upon his long-awaited comeback? But according to Chael Sonnen, that should be the least of the worries at the moment. Given there are more serious grounds to be covered before that. The UFC veteran believes that for the Irishman needs to delve deeper within and test the waters on a deeper surface if he wants to leave an everlasting mark on the world with his return.

And Coach Kavanagh, who’s been with him since the very beginning, will without a doubt be necessary to help him with that. But even for that, McGregor will need to have an answer ready for Kavanagh’s million-dollar question, which he posed to him before his second clash with Dustin Poirier.

Chael Sonnen advises Conor McGregor to be ready to answer Coach Kavanagh’s big question

The UFC veteran revisited when John Kavanagh refused to train Conor McGregor for his second encounter with Dustin Poirier in January 2021. The reason was, Kavanagh asked McGregor to define his ‘why’ before he started training him. This is something Sonnen believes is extremely important for the Irishman to get sorted, again, before he makes a comeback. Given that everything one does in this sport must come with a very specific purpose attached to it. And McGregor better be prepared this time, because he’ll definitely need a good ‘why’ from him.

Talking about McGregor’s current stage, Chael Sonnen said, “Conor’s hungry. And you can tell by his body that he wants to do it to a degree but wanted to remain part of a community that your identity is tied to versus wanting to do what it takes. Conor gets put in a very unique position.”

However, this return would be far from easy for ‘The Notorious’. Considering the fact that he’ll be coming back from a devastating injury, it’ll be a far more difficult bridge to cross. And only Coach Kavanagh can help him get through if he gets a strong enough answer from Conor McGregor.

“In Conor’s case, he’ll be having to do it coming off of an injury and a delay. And to go back to what Coach Kavanagh made very public, couple of years ago. ‘I need to know what your why is.’ Just to make sure that you have one.”, stated the UFC veteran.

Having said that, Chael Sonnen also feels that all of that is very important for Conor McGregor because maybe he might not have many years left to compete.

Conor McGregor’s contribution to the UFC is way more substantial than many credit him for. In fact, many of the UFC fans out there started watching the sport because of the Irishman. He became the biggest name in MMA and gained popularity worldwide. But given his injury and the fact that he is 34 years old, Chael Sonnen suggested that we might witness only around 3 more fights from ‘The Notorious’ before the era comes to an end.

Sonnen stated, “We have to know what weight class (he fights in). And whatever weight class Conor fights at, let’s make that the weight class he finishes at. Because we’ve only got… it’s hard to imagine that we got 3 fights left with Conor. Hard to imagine that we got more than 3 fights left. But we’re gonna get him out there three times.”
