Conor McGregor can easily qualify as a fighter with one of the best fight IQs in the game. Whether someone likes him or not, one cannot deny that the fighter throws strikes in a manner very few others can. Nevertheless, one doesn’t become a double champ with a low fight IQ.

McGregor has also shown a keen interest in breaking down fight sequences on the internet. ‘The Notorious’ often times uploads clips from a fight and breaks down the nuances of what exactly happened.

Recently, McGregor uploaded a picture from his fight with Donald Cerrone from UFC 246. In the picture, McGregor is landing strikes on ‘Cowboy’ while he’s curled up on the ground trying to defend himself. McGregor gave a full breakdown of the segment before the fight was stopped.

Conor McGregor gave fighting lessons to his fans

The caption of the post completely described the tips McGregor was giving to his fans. He wrote, “The temptation here for the attacking fighter in this lower center-of-gravity position is always to connect to the body. Grab a hold of it. Lean on it… But it’s very difficult to maneuver to a real ko finish this way.”

“However, If you can resist this temptation and build control and balance in this lower center position, as you see me with here, completely separating myself from the frame, you can aim for the temple and the body fully torqued and get the job done without prolonging any more time in there than needed.”

Thus, the fighter had some fight calculations for his online fans.

Furthermore, the Irishman added, “Downward striking is a whole art unto itself. If boxing, the sweet science, is horizontal punching, downward punching is it’s vertical equivalent. It must be studied and practiced deeply.”

Meanwhile, mentioning the picture, McGregor explained how he waited for his opponent to move his arm before he could start throwing punches.

My job was to be patient, controlled, and balanced in this position, completely free of connection, and unload to the temple when it presented itself.”

He concluded by saying, “Not falling for the temptation of connecting and holding, but realizing it and disengaging for better velocity in the shots. Adbulmanap said this fight was like watching magic and he was right. 100% downward ground and pound accuracy I had in this fight. I did not miss one shot. Enjoy ☘️

Nevertheless, the biggest takeaway from the post apart from McGregor’s high fight IQ was that he praised Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father, the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Moreover, he shared similar thoughts about fighting as the late great coach did.

While Nurmagomedov and McGregor are known for their intense rivalry, ‘The Notorious’ acknowledging Nurmagomedov’s father’s expertise might be a refreshing turn.
