As the UFC president, Dana White clearly knows how to run things like a top executive. Having been at the helm for more than two decades, the 53-year-old’s tenacity in making tough decisions has clearly paid off well. Owing to this, White has taken the promotion that once used to struggle in finding arenas for events and turned it into the biggest fight organization in the world. And clearly, a job like this includes making decisions that could influence the profitability of the company in the long run.

One such piece of news that exhibits the extent of how far the UFC president would go in making these decisions, was revealed in his latest interview. Speaking ahead of UFC 286, White, when asked about yesterday’s shocking turn of events during the weigh-ins, revealed how it was not just the media and fans, but even his family was kept in the dark.

Dana White’s son called him up in disbelief after Covington’s announcement as a backup

Colby Covington, showing up at the weigh-ins as a backup fighter for the main event between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman, had created quite a scene in the MMA community. Since his appearance came out of the blue, fans were dumbstruck at the secrecy that the UFC managed to keep ahead of the weigh-ins. And shockingly, it was not just us fans that were left surprised, as Dana White revealed in his interview.

The UFC president claimed his son too reached out to him right after Covington stepped on the scale. Stating that he was rather confused as to why ‘Chaos’ had to make weight, White claims he had to explain that every big fight had a backup to his son.

“My son actually hit me up said, ‘dad, I don’t understand this, what’s going on? Why did Colby Covington weigh in’. Yeah, so I had to explain it to him. I said, “there’s always a backup for a fight. It just never gets as much attention as Colby did today,” explained White.

Well, the president clearly knows what’s best for his fighters. And for an event as massive as UFC London, it’s quite understandable that certain things cannot be publicly announced.

For the former interim champ, his appearance yesterday came after over a year of inactivity when he last fought Jorge Masvidal.
